Goals of the Graduate Component:

The goals of the graduate RISE program are to increase the number of students who complete the Ph.D. degree program in biomedical science; to increase the number of publications authored by doctoral students; and to increase the number of degree recipients who enter into postdoctoral training.

By participating in the RISE program, graduate students gain exposure to cutting-edge research technology and notable scientists, have an opportunity to conduct research with some of these scientists, have opportunities to present their research at national meetings, and are able to publish their results in peer-reviewed journals.

Criteria:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 (overall and in the sciences) from the B.S. degree-awarding institution

  • Interest in becoming a productive biomedical researcher

  • Three strong letters of recommendation from former college instructors (at least two from the sciences)

  • Must agree to abide by publication / presentation requirements:
    • Publication requirement - Student and mentor must agree to submit at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal from student's dissertation research prior to student's graduation.

    • Presentation requirement - Student and mentor must agree that the student will present research results at at least one major conference in the research interest field prior to the student's graduation.

  • Must agree to apply for individual predoctoral fellowship
